The problem you are living with right now

Let’s be honest about how fast this happened. A vendor showed up with an AI tool. The demo was good. The pilot went fine. You said yes, because standing still felt worse than moving.

Now it is in classrooms, and the questions are getting harder. If this sounds like your district, you are not behind. You are normal.

  • You are not completely sure where the student data goes once a child types into that tool.
  • Somebody has to read every online educational service’s terms and privacy policy, name a person responsible for approving them, post the disclosures publicly, and get specific protections into every vendor contract.

Why my background matters for this problem

Melanin Tech & AI Solutions is a new company. You will not find a wall of client logos here, or a number I made up to look impressive. What I can show you is where I learned this work and why it lines up with the question in front of you.

A doctorate in Computer Science

My Ph.D. is in Computer Science. My dissertation built an adaptive learning system called SAILS, using Bayesian networks (a math method for updating a belief as new evidence arrives), Bloom’s Taxonomy (a way of ranking how deep a thinking skill is), the Felder-Soloman Learning Style Index, and self-efficacy tracking (measuring how capable a learner believes they are).

Writing the software was never the hard part. The hard part was justifying every single claim that system made about a learner. That is the same question a district faces the first time a parent pushes back on a score.

Nine years on the infrastructure behind the Nation’s Report Card

From 2015 to 2024 I was a Principal Data Engineer at Educational Testing Service. I was the primary architect of my team’s AWS cloud infrastructure supporting NAEP, the National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as the Nation’s Report Card. That is student data at national scale, with results published for the whole country and reviewed by people whose job is to find the flaw. Work like that does not let you be casual.

Active AI research, right now

I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Howard University’s Human-Centered AI Institute, working on virtual reality and scaffolding for adaptive learning under ONR Award N00014-22-1-2714. Scaffolding means support that is strong early and fades as a learner gets stronger. I am not reading about this field from a distance. I am working in it this week.
